*Disclaimer: A score of 5 is the midpoint for my reviews. Above 5 I like it. Below 5 I didn’t for some reason. Most of my reviews are between 4-7. It takes something really really special to go above 7 or below 4. See the methodologies for rating at the end of the article

Nose: Stone Fruit, Light Caramel, Vanilla Bean, Cinnamon, and Grain Husk ( Slight Earthy Nose ).

Taste/Palate: Slightly Sharp for a Buffalo Trace product with a little more bite than normal. Caramel, Cinnamon, Stone Fruits again, with a Simple Syrup type sweetness. Simple and not complex at all.

Finish: The finish rounds out with some spice similar to Cinnamon Red Hots with mild Fresh oak. It has lingering sweetness and Caramel with underlying fruitiness in the back seat.

Verdict: Overall it was pretty good, but it was missing substance. I put this head to head against Weller Special Reserve and Special Reserve has so much more to offer. Not to mention Weller SR is a little thin itself. If you can find it for the MSRP of $40 (I had to google that MSRP) sure give it a try. I found it for $79 at a Binny’s in Chicago and in Michigan I have only seen price tags of $99 or more. This came across as younger than a 7 year whiskey. If I tried this blind I would have been fooled. I won’t be revisiting this bottle any time soon. Not because it’s horrible, but mostly because I’ve tried it and I know that there’s much more out there for less than that can deliver more.
MSRP: Give it a shot at $40. Price Ceiling: $50 and that’s pushing it. (The most I’d pay for this bottle)

The Story: I, like many, saw a Buffalo Trace product that had “wheat” listed and it got my mind turning… How does this stack up against some of the iconic Buffalo Trace brands that feature Wheat (Weller line, Pappy line, & 1792 Sweet Wheat)? The Kosher aspect of the whiskey didn’t impact my purchase decision. I can say though that now that I’ve tried this, I will be leaving these on the shelf to those who actually need Kosher Whiskey when they partake.

The Distillery’s Story – Kosher Wheat Specific: “Buffalo Trace Distillery produced this Wheat Recipe Bourbon in a partnership with the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc). Made with the same high quality grains as W.L. Weller Bourbon Whiskey, this Kosher spirit was aged in specifically designated Kosher barrels. In order to satisfy Passover requirements, these barrels were sold to a non-Jewish executive in a ceremony witnessed by a representative from the cRc. After aging for seven years, this Wheat Recipe Bourbon was bottled at 94 proof after ensuring the bottling lines were cleaned beforehand and that no contact was made with non-Kosher spirits. Released after Passover each year, this Wheat Recipe Bourbon stands alone, a tribute to the legacy of America’s oldest continually-operating distillery.”

Methodologies for Rating:
1. Dump it down the drain or regift it to someone you don’t care for.
2. This doesn’t even belong in a mixed drink. Use in case of an emergency.
3. It’s really not for me, but I heard some people like it.
4. Its only good when I’ve had too many and it’s decent in a mixer.
5. Average. Not bad, but not special.
6. Above average. Good to bring to an event and you wouldn’t expect any guff from it.
7. Buy two if you see it to make sure you have one on reserve.
8. Very Very good. Constantly a GREAT POUR.
9. Superb. If I were to drink this and only this from now on I’d be a happy person.
10. Perfection is impossible. But this really comes as close as you can possibly get.
