*Disclaimer: A score of 5 is the midpoint for my reviews. Above 5 I like it. Below 5 I didn’t for some reason. Most of my reviews are between 4-7. It takes something really really special to go above 7 or below 4. See the methodologies for rating at the end of the article
Nose: Citrus, Molasses, White Pepper, Dark Fruit, and some Cinnamon.
Taste/Palate: Soft mouthfeel and palate. Starts out tame and smooth with Uncooked Marshmallow, Caramel, and a little Oak. In the midpalate it picks up on the Pepper, Crisp Apples, and Berries. Light on the heat.
Finish: Medium length, medium spice finish then it rounds out on the sweeter side with Fruits and Berries.
Verdict: At $35 dollars for the bottle it’s very solid. It claims to be complex, which I wouldn’t say it’s overly complex, but it does start out sweet and smooth, then spice, and rounds out sweet and smooth again. Not a typical transition that I’ve noticed in other finished bourbons. I’d recommend this to a standard bourbon drinker. If you want heavy char, pepper bombs, or cask strength burn you will have to look elsewhere and probably pay more. Not so much the taste, but at least the complexity is similar to Angel’s Envy. You can tell it’s on the younger side, but the finishing greatly helps develop it’s character.
The Story: I went to my local liquor store and asked for Larceny (a low cost solid sipping bourbon). Apparently at this particular store every bourbon is behind the counter. Even the ones that are $15. The gentleman came back and handed me Legent. Ok, I get it, Legent, Larceny, that’s pretty close. As far as bourbons are concerned they are not even close though. I’ve had this bottle on my list so I didn’t correct him, decided it was a sign and I purchased it.
The Distillery’s Story: Fred Noe of Jim Beam teamed up with Shinji Fukuyo of Suntory (Japan). Two of the most respected whiskey makers in the world teaming up to create something new. They first cooked up a a typical Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and met those standards and from there they went in a couple different directions. The juice is then aged in sherry and wine barrels and then blended back with more Kentucky Straight Bourbon. And there you have it. Easy Peasy.
Methodologies for Rating:
1. Dump it down the drain or regift it to someone you don’t care for.
2. It doesn’t even belong in a mixed drink. Use in case of an emergency.
3. It’s really not for me, but I heard some people like it.
4. Its only good when I’ve had too many and it’s decent in a mixer.
5. Solid. It hit all of what’s expected.
6. Above average. Good to bring to an event and you wouldn’t expect any guff from it.
7. Buy two if you see it to make sure you have one on reserve.
8. Very Very good. Constantly a GREAT POUR.
9. Superb. If I were to drink this and only this from now on I’d be a happy person.
10. Perfection is impossible. But this really comes as close as you can possibly get.
