*Disclaimer: A score of 5 is the midpoint for my reviews. Above 5 I like it. Below 5 I didn’t for some reason. Most of my reviews are between 4-7. It takes something really really special to go above 7 or below 4. See the methodologies for rating at the end of the article

Nose: Healthy Balance of Sweet and Spice. Caramel, Medium – Musty Oak, Figs, Blackberry, Orange Zest, Cardamom & Cinnamon.

Taste/Palate: Standard Mouthfeel. Medium Heat. Oaky and mature out of the gate. Medium barrel char comes through.  Sweetness comes forward first with the Oak notes. Caramel & Toffee, followed by Blackberry and White Chocolate.

Finish: The finish rounds out with more sweet characteristics that are dominant. Medium Oak again, a rush of Vanilla on the finish, Mild Rye spice in the background with Leather.

Verdict: This one gets a big thumbs up. It has a lot going on. A great blend that shows it’s age and complexity that doesn’t overpower in any particular category. The higher Rye mash bills had me slightly concerned that this would lean towards the Rye Spice / Mint category, but this bottle is far from your standard rye heavy Bourbons. I am putting this bottle in my top 5 bourbons of 2021.
MSRP: BUY all day! Price Ceiling: $150 (The most I’d pay for this bottle)

The Story: I’ve been after Remus Repeal for a year now. It’s not a bottle that too many people are after, but it’s still not easy to find. Remus Repeal is in the “IFKYK” (If you know you know) category. IW Harper 15 used to be in this category, but now it’s turned into a highly difficult bottle to locate. I happened to find this bottle sitting on the shelf in at my local Total Wine. There was about 5 “bourbon hunters” perusing the aisles. I went right for the Repeal. I suggested the Remus Repeal to those who were in the aisle, but because it wasn’t in a case or have a “limit 1” sign next to it, I think that many don’t know what they might have passed up. Their loss. Regardless, based on taste alone I don’t think that Remus Repeal Series will be in the dark for long. I’m sure this will be a highly sought after bottle in the future.

I really appreciate the bottle appearance. It reminds me of something out of the Great Gatsby or more recently Altered Carbon. It also gives a nice breakdown of what makes up the Bourbon.

The Distillery’s Story: G Remus Distillery is the MGP Flagship bourbon. MGP is known to be to the large distillery that many other distilleries source their juice from. These other distilleries grab MGP juice, bottle it under their own name, Maybe splash some special water in there or introduce some form of finishing technique and call it their own. Not to mention slap a hefty price tag on there. It’s nice to see MGP utilizing their own products and putting out some great pours.

G Remus Distillery was named after George Remus who was a notorious bootlegger (Similar to Capone) out of Cincinnati. Miles away from Lawrenceburg, IN where MGP was located. The specific Repeal name is a tip of the hat to the alcohol repeal during prohibition.

Methodologies for Rating:
1. Dump it down the drain or regift it to someone you don’t care for.
2. This doesn’t even belong in a mixed drink. Use in case of an emergency.
3. It’s really not for me, but I heard some people like it.
4. Its only good when I’ve had too many and it’s decent in a mixer.
5. Solid. It hit all of what’s expected.
6. Above average. Good to bring to an event and you wouldn’t expect any guff from it.
7. Buy two if you see it to make sure you have one on reserve.
8. Very Very good. Constantly a GREAT POUR.
9. Superb. If I were to drink this and only this from now on I’d be a happy person.
10. Perfection is impossible. But this really comes as close as you can possibly get.

Nose, Palate, and Finish I rank regardless of cost. Value (recent addition) is ranked based on taste vs price.
